Guest Book

We’ve been fortunate to stay in a number of wonderful rental homes over the years, but this house was unquestionably our favorite. The space worked beautifully for our group of 10 (two families with kids ranging in age from 6-14). It’s a real home, filled with a diverse array of fascinating books and comfortable furnishings, and dotted with bits of local, house, and family history. There’s tons of indoor space with multiple areas for groups to hang out – from the large screened in porch, to the comfy living room, to the dining room with a table that comfortably seats 10 (with plenty of elbow room), to a kitchen where four or five people could collaborate on cooking projects without stepping on each others’ toes. Outdoor social areas were similarly delightful, including the outdoor dining/grill area, seating and a swing under the huge tree next to the house, and the out-sized dock with umbrella-covered table and deck chairs. The master bedroom is truly luxurious, with its attached terrace, in-room jacuzzi, and a shower in the master bathroom that did double duty as a serious steam room. Fast wifi was also a boon, since several of us were often working on video conferences simultaneously.

We’re a pretty food-obsessed group and the kitchen was an absolute joy. Filled with windows overlooking the backyard and pond, it had all the basic kitchen tools, including respectable knives (a rarity in vacation rentals) and first rate appliances. Highlights include: the 6-burner gas stove with dual ovens and a commercial-grade griddle, a large island with a second sink and marble countertop, an oversized and wonderfully designed fridge, quick access from the kitchen to a large outdoor gas grill, and a garden full of herbs and vegetables. There were also small surprises like a milk frother that worked so well that we bought one when we returned home.

The kids spent the summer running around the enormous backyard, climbing around the treehouse, exploring the woods and swimming, canoeing, and rafting around the pond. The pond was warm enough for even the most cold-averse of us to swim comfortably all summer long. At porbably 40 or 50 meters long, several of us used it for regular lap swimming too. The trail around the pond (probably ~150 meters), was also terrific for morning runs. The size of the property meant that we only saw or heard neighbors if we went out to the road.

While it almost pains us to write this review because we want the house all to ourselves, we feel compelled to honesty in light of our lovely host. Esther was wonderful to deal with and highly responsive. She made the rental administratively painless. Any maintenance needs were addressed quickly and thoroughly. Our deposit was returned promptly. Esther, unsolicited, even looked into whether changes in local taxes due to COVID might result in a refund for us.

This is truly our idea of an ideal country house. We hope to return soon!

This is a wonderful home on a beautiful piece of land, complete with a deep pond fit for swimming. Highlights of the house are its large, fully equipped kitchen and a comfortable screened-in porch. It’s only about 10 minutes from Red Hook, which has excellent restaurants and shopping. The owner is very nice and very accommodating.

Wonderful weekend, the pond is phenomenal, it’s a beautiful property with a firepit, lots of grass, a swing, a little raft for the pond (perfect for bringing out a bucket of beers to sunbathe on), and a great big fish who we nicknamed Herbert. I’d recommend this property to anyone- it’s wonderful and the owner is a pleasure to work with.

Best house we stayed in so far, this is a beautiful house, with lots of space Owner is really nice and accommodating. The master bedroom is so beautiful, including a jacuzzi and a steam room. And a beautiful view. We spend a weekend, there was lot’s of snow outside and the kids went out sledding and playing, it was real winter fun. There is a fire place and the lace feels so cozy, the house is well heated and everything just works. Large great kitchen with everything in there, The kitchen stove is a masterpiece – so much joy to cook in there – nothing is missing.

What a peaceful place to spend a long weekend or week! I had such a lovely stay in this house with 9 friends (we all fit with room to spare). We had a wonderful time running around on the sprawling side and back lawns playing badminton, football and frisbee, followed by long soaks in the nice deep and clean pond surrounded by cooling trees. There are shade trees everywhere, the house itself is lovely and full of lots of quirky fun details (even a rustic treehouse!), and we had some great meals we cooked in the huge kitchen and on the grill with fresh produce we bought from all those Hudson Valley farm stands. And wound up sitting up half the night on the big flagstone terrace enjoying the sound of the frogs.

We just spent a fantastic long weekend in this beautiful, idyllic farmhouse. While the company was great, just being in this house made the weekend quite special. This is one of those charmed spots that transports you to another, better world: wide-beamed wood floors, a beautiful communal kitchen with professional stove, the perfect screened in porch that overlooks your own private pond. The house is rustic, comfortable (fully-equipped with all), sophisticated, warm and spacious all at once. And that’s just the inside. The grounds are huge and offer everything you could want: a garden, several big lawns for playing games (we played croquet, badminton, football and frisbee), a forested area, wild lilies, herbs for cooking, a treehouse, a small swing-set and, the highlight, a wonderful deep swimmable pond, complete with dock for jumping and diving. Yes, you can dive into the pond – it’s large, deep (we were told 15 ft.) and clean – more like a small lake, really. It’s hard to beat swimming in your own private fresh-water body of water.
If you’re feeling too lazy to cook, at the end of the road you can find “the Finer Diner,” a little gourmet diner with great food. We also went kayaking one day from Catskill, which was a fun excursion. Basically, a perfect getaway and only 1 hr 45 minutes from NYC. The only downside was that we had to leave. We’ll be back, though. This one’s a keeper!

Extremely comfortable, spacious, and well furnished house. It was sort of what you imagine a country house should be. Fabulous country kitchen with all the cooking appliances and utensils you could ever want or need. Also, a real treat is that even though the house is in a purely rural setting, there is a phenomenally creative chef who owns the restaurant “Another Fork in the Road” less than a five minute WALK from the house. We stayed in March, and the heat was very responsive – even though it’s a mid nineteenth century house and retains the charm of the period, the mechanicals have all been nicely updated. Our only regret about being here in March was that we could not take advantage of the huge swimming pond – looked like it would be extremely inviting during the summer months. An extra treat was that our bathroom had a steam shower. The eclectic book collection could put most libraries to shame. And it was all only a ninety minute drive from the Triborough Bridge.
